Preventing Crime and Violence in South African Schools

The Criminal Justice Initiative (CJI) has funded some eight different organisations that have developed strategies for reducing school-based crime and violence. The experiences and impacts emanating from the various funded approaches offer an opportunity for CJI to step back and survey the ongoing various strategies in this sector. This review was conducted to address two critical questions: (1) What was learnt or gained from the various types of CJI-funded interventions; and (2) what would an ideal school-based crime prevention strategy look like, and how should this impact on CJI grant-making strategy?
